FoundationLab, a Boston-based digital product design studio whose clients include a number of law firms and legal tech start-ups, has acquired Functional Imperative, an application development company in Toronto, Canada, that also has several legal clients, including the Canadian Legal Information Institute, the law firm Fasken Martineau, and the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.
The acquisition positions FoundationLab as the leading legal-tech-focused design and development company in North America, the company said in announcing the acquistion.
FoundationLab was launched in 2015 by Eric Sullivan, who previously founded Baked&Branded, a technology services firm that specialized in bringing startups to market, and then was chief technology officer of StrongCan Interactive after the online branding and marketing firm acquired Baked&Branded. Mike Cappucci former co-founder and CEO of Baked&Branded, later joined Sullivan at FoundationLab.
While FoundationLab works with clients across multiple industries, much of its focus is in legal technology, where it has a number of law firm and legal tech clients.
Functional Imperative’s founder, Joshua Borts, will remain an advisor during the transition, and
Eamon Coen, its head of sales, will continue to serve existing clients and support sales operations
in Canada.
In a statement, FoundationLab said that it hopes to leverage Functional Imperative’s existing network and continue to drive legal innovation in Canada.
“We’re incredibly excited by the opportunity to break into the Canadian market and are thankful for the hard work done by the Functional Imperative team to carve out a space in legal tech,” Sullivan said.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
